Tampa Retail Properties Under Construction in Q4 2021

When it comes to the national average, Tampa is now building at a relative rate just under it, after 2021 was expected to see among the decade’s lowest retail completion totals. 

The latest CoStar data shows us that even though significant additional retail groundbreakings are unlikely over the near term given the lingering uncertainty of the pandemic, the pipeline is still expansive and includes several large projects. One of the largest recent deliveries was the first phase of Midtown Tampa, a $500 million mixed-use development at the intersection of Interstate 275 and Dale Mabry Highway. Whole Foods and REI’s first location along the west coast of Florida opened in the summer of 2021 in Midtown Tampa.

The recent influx of grocery chains into the Tampa metro from brands such as Sprouts Farmers Market has prompted new construction responses from existing grocers in an effort to stay competitive. The region’s biggest player, Publix, has set aside $1.3 billion to buy more centers, build stores, and renovate existing sites.
